Do we take national defence seriously enough?

The US cutbacks come just as it’s been revealed by The Age that six of Australia’s key national security positions are currently unfilled – including the role of national security adviser, which has been vacant since August last year.
So can we still rely on the USA to come to our aid if needed, or do we need to look at beefing up our own military and security muscles?
