The diver and his buddy found the 3-metre predator feeding off a dead whale in the Coral Sea, around 60kms offshore from Port Douglas.

Armed with a video camera, the divers jumped in and captured the shark feeding on the carcass.

The shark then made a few close passes by the divers, who soon became comfortable enough to give the shark a pat.

At one stage, the cameraman even grabbed on to its dorsal fin and was taken for a short ride.

The divers aren't trying to sell their story.

In fact, they're staying completely anonymous, as whales, even dead ones, are a protected species and they could be whacked with a huge penalty.
