Another day, another attack, or so it seems, in a dog attack overnight that left a 4-year-old girl dead, and two more people injured.
It's a worrying trend that has many concerned, which isn't surprising, as these attacks are becoming more and more frequent. And while these news stories have many people gasping in horror, I can't help but ask, just what has to actually happen to make people do something about it?
On Wednesday night, while 4-year-old Ayen Chol played inside with her 5-year-old cousin, a neighbour’s pit bull cross escaped, entered their home and mauled the children and another, 30-year-old cousin. Completely unprovoked.
Seriously, WTF.
It's like a story from that kid at school you don't want to believe, but you know is speaking the truth. When I first heard the news, I couldn't believe it. I hate these attack stories and they upset me. Not just because it's completely horrible, but because they can be prevented. Always. I could rattle off at least 5 ways to prevent last night's attack, and one of them could not only have prevented the attack, but if put in place now, will guarantee this never happens again.
So here it is, I'm just going to go and say it. Kill them. Not just the pit bull cross in the attack, but all of them. Just get rid of them entirely, one by one. Do to them as they are doing to us. Two wrongs don't make a right, sure, but 300,000 wrongs (or however many there are) just could make it right. I'm sick of them and their completely irrational aggression, and I honestly think that we would be better off without them.
I may come off as insensitive, or being irrational myself, but believe me, I've had time to think about this. I've sat here for the last little while trying to come up with a pros and cons list of pit bulls, and the only pro I have is that they have given me something to write about today. Their contribution to society is zero, and as the statistics show, they're dangerous. Very dangerous. So let's do it, extinguish the pest and continue onward and upward, pit-bull-less. Like a league of extraordinary people who don't ever have to deal with pit bulls again.
Without pit bulls, there would be more cute dogs. And fun dogs. Less bitey dogs. And therefore more awesome dogs. And with that, I do believe that this discussion could be over.
"What about other breeds of dog that attack?" I hear some people asking… True, what about them? Get rid of them too. They should be illegal to have as pets. You know why? BECAUSE THEY'RE NOT PETS. They're proven deadly.
My stance on this is not unfounded idiocy, either. Just look at cats. You're allowed to have a household cat as a pet, but you can't keep a tiger or lion or jaguar in your backyard, can you? Same should go with dogs. Pit bulls - GONE, Rotweilers - GONE, Dobermans - GONE, Jack Russells - OK.
Before you attack me for taking away from the horrible tragedy this week, I'm not. I'm just putting the spotlight on the cause and bigger picture. Because unless we find a fix for this, it will keep happening. Families will continue to lose loved ones and people will continue to get hurt. And by destroying each dog after it attacks, we're simply putting a Band-Aid on a wound that never had to happen in the first place. Wouldn't it be great if I had absolutely no reason to write this in the first place? Or even think about this? I shouldn't be bringing up this discussion and I don't have to. All we have to do is destroy the lot of them. That's all. It would take, like, a month at most…
