Muscles - about a young weightlifter and her jealous little brother - is the work of two Victorian College of the Arts students, Edward Houdsen and Luke Sherry.
It is one of nine productions vying for the short film Palme d’Or, and its creators like their chances.
"They're pretty good odds when you consider it," Sherry told The Australian.
Australia's other showing at Cannes, Deeper Than Yesterday, is set in a Russian submarine and spoken completely in Russian. It will screen at Critics' Week.
