A spokesman for the supermarket franchise, Benedict Brook, said “customers want a range of products they can buy on the go” and that the changes reflect sales data, customer research and “innovation”.

Anti-junk food campaigners, the Parents Jury, have said the move will take the supermarket backwards, as manager Karen Sims expressed: “we’re pretty surprised…because [Woolworths] have made other moves in a positive direction, such as promoting sensible meals for families”.

In 2007, Woolworths actually introduced some confectionary-free checkouts, but the Parents Jury wants to see unhealthy snacks removed from half of their checkouts.
