Four Australian passports are amongst a cache of fakes linked to January's assassination of a senior Palestinian military commander in a Dubai hotel.
Following an investigation by federal police and ASIO, Foreign Minister Stephen Smith yesterday announced there was "no doubt" of Israel's involvement in the forgeries.
"These investigations and advice have left the Australian Government in no doubt that Israel was responsible for the abuse and counterfeiting of these passports.
"This is not what we expect from a nation with whom we have had such a close, friendly and supportive relationship."
But the Deputy Opposition Leader, Julie Bishop, says the government is playing politics over the issue.
She has accused the government of trying to win Arab support at the United Nations, where it is pushing for a seat on the Security Council.
"There is a widely held view, there is an assumption that the Israeli government was involved, but there is no actual proof," she told Sky News.
