The 28-year-old Melbournian left school at 15 to focus on his snooker career, and now, after 13 years of trying, has achieved the game's ultimate success.
"There's no way in the world the guys who beat me [in the past] would've thought I could do what I've done," Robertson said in a post-match interview.
When asked what he thought his win could do for the game in Australia, the new world champ joked: "Well, if this doesn’t do anything, then I probably won’t call myself Australian anymore."
Proud mum Alison made it to Sheffield, England, for her son's win, however Robertson now has to rush off to be with his heavily pregnant girlfriend, Millie.
"Hopefully she can hang on for a few days yet," Robertson told the UK's Telegraph.
"Being a first time, usually they’re a little bit late."
