A BIS Shrapnel report predicts our only "global" city will play second fiddle to our former capital by 2037, as people struggle to find affordable housing in the harbour city.
The report predicts Melbourne's yearly growth of 1.3 per cent will push its population to 5.7 million by 2037, while Sydney will hit a "critical affordability ceiling" for housing within 5 years.
"Our city is fading," NSW Urban Taskforce CEO Aaron Gadiel told the Herald Sun.
"If Melbourne overtakes Sydney in people and housing then Sydney loses its relevance as the commercial heart of Australia, and status as a global city."
