The man accused of yesterday's murder cannot be named for legal reasons.
According to reports, he was so trusted by Williams that he was once asked to be godfather to the crime lord's daughter – but could not do so because he was thrown in jail before the christening took place.
While the men had shared a unit in the prison without incident for 15 months, the Herald Sun reports he is "one of the prison system's most dangerous inmates" who is, according to an unnamed source, "right off-tap".
The accused appeared in court this morning via a video link from prison.
When asked by Magistrate Ron Saines if he had anything to say, he simply replied: "Nah."
While some are pleased to see the back of the notorious gangland supremo, Victoria's Chief Police Commissioner, Simon Overland, says "there are obviously going to be repercussions".
"We’ve got a very clear view of what happened, but it doesn’t answer the key question of why."
