Williams was serving 35 years in prison for his role in the murders of several Melbourne underworld figures.

He suffered serious head injuries in the attack and died a short time later from cardiac arrest, according to reports.

The so-called "baby-faced killer" was one of the central characters in the Underbelly series and he was in the news again today, with the Herald Sun reporting that police had paid to put his daughter through a top Victorian school.

The paper says it has obtained a letter written by the Victorian Government Solicitor's Office which shows police paid $8,000 for his daughter to attend the prestigious private school.

The paper says it cannot reveal why the payment was made, and says authorities are unwilling to explain their largesse.

The letter also contains an offer to pay off the $750,000 owed by Williams' father to the tax department.
