The 27-year-old man went exploring the drains in the evening, but his adventure hit a major snag when his torch ran out of power.

His phone didn't have a SIM card, but he was still able to call 000.

However, the best description that he could offer police of his location was that it had concrete and steel covers.

Police were unsure whether or not it was a hoax call, but eventually managed to find him in the early hours of the morning, a short distance from where he entered.

"He used to go into the drains then he was a kid and decided he would go in again at the age of 27 and have a bit of a look," Sergeant Craig MacGregor told The Age.

"It's probably not the wisest thing to do in the middle of the night, or any time I don't think."
