Martin achieved international fame in the late 90s with songs like Livin' la Vida Loca and She Bangs.
But his sexuality was always an elusive subject during his time at the head of the charts.
The Puerto Rican singer made the decision to come out publically while writing his memoirs, which he says made him realise he didn't want to carry the secret around with him any longer.
"I am proud to say that I am a fortunate homosexual man," Martin posted on his official website.
"I am very blessed to be who I am."
Martin's career began at the age of six, when he appeared in TV commercials.
He went on to perform on Broadway in Les Miserables and sung the official anthem for the 1998 World Cup.
