The 99th and 100th boat were intercepted by the Navy on Sunday night and bring the total number of asylum seekers to have sailed into Australian waters under Rudd's watch to 4386.

The latest arrivals will push the Immigration Department's detention facility on Christmas Island close to or beyond capacity.

A group of unsuccessful asylum seekers were last week moved to the mainland.

Much of the heavy traffic sailing across the Indian Ocean is coming from troubled Sri Lanka, via Indonesia.

Today's Herald Sun reports the government is worried the issue will become an election spoiler and plans to set aside hundreds of millions of dollars in May's budget for border control.
