The Australian invention is designed to cover cakes, so that they don't come into contact with germs and saliva when candles are put out.

According to experts, however, the contraption won't work.

"As soon as you stand 1m to 2m from someone in a normal setting, nothing is going to stop the spread of germs," Professor Mary-Louise McLaws, director of the University of NSW hospital infection and epidemiology unit told the Daily Telegraph.

"If you wanted to stop the spread of infection, you would have to wear a mask while making the cake, keep the kids 1m to 2m apart and not talk to each other around the cake."

"I am not going overboard. Prevention is better than cure."
